Course Reservation FAQs
What if I am unable to reserve spaces in all the classes I am interested in?
There is no guarantee that you will be able to reserve spaces in all of your first choice classes. Through the course
reservation process you will hopefully be able to get a couple of those “ideal classes.” The good news is that as a
first-year student, you need lots of classes and almost every course available will work for you – either to explore
a potential area of interest, complete a Linfield Curriculum requirement, or introduce you to an academic discipline
you have never encountered before. So don’t despair if you can’t get everything you want, trying out new
stuff is part of what it means to be in college.
(Also, when you register your courses during Orientation weekend, all students have the chance to change their
courses, so you may be able to switch into those classes that are currently full)
What if I do not start coursework in one of my areas of interest? Will I be behind?
If you are unable to reserve a space in the recommended first semester courses (review the Advising Information by Area of Interest and the Area of Interest Grid) you will be fine. There are no majors or minors at Linfield that you will be unable to complete if you do not start coursework in your first semester. Take this opportunity to try out new areas of interest, explore courses that sound exciting, take a Linfield curriculum course, etc. If you are very concerned about this – contact your faculty advisor (review their letter to you) and the Office of Academic Advising at 503-883-2250 or aad@linfield.edu.
I reserved space in certain classes but now I have changed my mind – why can’t I change my
schedule?
Once course reservations are submitted, all first-year students will be able to change course schedules during
Orientation weekend. During Orientation weekend, you will meet with your faculty and peer advisors, discuss
your options, make changes to your reservations, and register.
What if I am a fall athlete – does that affect my course schedule?
As a fall athlete, it is very important that you consider how many classes you reserve space in. As an athlete, you
will be very busy with academics, practice, competitions, travel, etc. No more then 12-14 credits is appropriate for
your first semester.
Also, depending on your sport, you may be required to reserve a space in a sport-related activity course during Fall
Semester. Contact your coach and check to make sure. These courses are offered through the Health and Human
Performance and Athletics Department (coded HHPA) with course numbers below 100. For example, if you were
planning to swim on the women’s team, you would reserve a space in HHPA008B – Intercoll Swimming: Women.
What if I am a fall athlete – How do I know when my practices are?
If you are a fall athlete you need to contact your coach to determine when your practices will be held during Fall
Semester. Do your best to select courses that do not overlap with your practice schedule. It may not, however, be
possible to avoid overlap. If there is a course you are interested in and it overlaps with your practice schedule it will
be OK. You are a student athlete and your academics are your primary focus as a student at Linfield.
How will my credits transfer to Linfield (AP or IB credits and college classes taken during high school)?
If you plan to bring in credit for AP, IB or college courses taken before you enter Linfield, it is very important
to note that you cannot get credit for the same content twice. For example, if you bring in credit for calculus –
whether AP, IB or on a college transcript, you cannot get credit for the same calculus course here. If you bring in
college credit for language study taken in high school, you must take a higher level of language at Linfield in order
to transfer the previous credit. The same is true for any course – you only get credit for the same content once.
Linfield will grant up to 5 elective credits for Advanced Placement (AP) scores of 4 or 5 in academic areas normally
taught at Linfield. Evaluations for credit are done on a course-by-course basis. Credit given is comparable to
the amount of credits the course is given for at Linfield. Credit will be awarded on a course-by-course basis for
International Baccalaureate (IB) subject examinations and higher level courses passed with a grade of 5, 6, or 7.
All credit earned through AP and IB scores is elective credit and does not satisfy Linfield Curriculum or major
requirements.
Credit earned through Running Start or a similar dual enrollment program will be reviewed on a course-by-course
basis. Generally, academically-focused courses taken with a “C” or better and above the 100-level will transfer for
some type of credit. Linfield will accept math classes at or above the level of Intermediate Algebra (MATH 095 in
the Oregon State System). Since Linfield operates on a semester academic calendar, coursework taken in 10-week
quarters will be converted to semesters. College credit may satisfy Linfield Curriculum or major requirements,
however the grades for these courses will not be factored into your Linfield GPA.
To find out if your credit has already been recorded, log into to WebAdvisor and view your academic transcript.
Contact the Office of the Registrar at reg@linfield.edu if you have any questions.
What is the difference between making course reservations and registering for classes?
Course reservations are made in the summer so that you, and your faculty advisor, have an idea of what you will
take in the fall. You will officially register for classes during Orientation weekend, after you have consulted your
faculty and peer advisors.
