Environmental Studies - Science Focus

Environmental Studies features two main fields of study, a Science Track and a Policy Track.  Students interested in Environmental Studies should consult the current catalog for the most up to date requirements of the Environmental Studies major and minor, but the basic elements of the major are as follows. 

GUIDELINES FOR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS:

FALL SEMESTER:

  • ENVS 201 Environmental Science
  • BIOL 210 Principles of Biology
  • Note – if BIOL 210 is closed, take CHEM 210 or PHYS 210
  • MATH 140 Statistics or MATH 105 Intermediate Algebra

SPRING SEMESTER:

  • ENVS 030, 040 or 090 Natural History of This Place We Inhabit, Community Action or Environmental Issues Forum
  • ENVS 203 or 250     Human Ecology or Environmental Sociology
  • ECON 210 Principles of Economics
  • BIOL 211 Principles of Biology

MAJOR/MINOR SPECIFIC ADVISING INFORMATION:
Common Core: ENVS 030 or 040 or 090, 201, 203 or 250 385, 485; quantitative courses: MATH 140 or MATH 340; and MATH 160 (Policy Focus) or MATH 170 (Science Focus) or higher; and Distribution Courses: ECON 210; ENGL 304 or HIST 152 or PHIL 306.

SCIENCE FOCUS: Common Core and Required Supporting courses plus BIOL 285; 16-18 science credits from the following: BIOL 210 and 211; and CHEM 210 and 211 or PHYS 210 and 211; 3-credit social science elective from ANTH/BIOL 105, 290; ANTH 111, 112; ECON 341, 342, 351; ENVS 230; ENVS/SOAN 250; MSCM 150, 175, 275; SOCL 370; 8 credits of natural science electives from ANTH/BIOL 290; BIOL 235, 260, 270, 280, 330, 350, 361, 385, 410, 450; CHEM 321, 322, 335, 340, 350, 361; ENVS 302, 305, 306, 307, 308, 360, 380, 440, 450, 480, 487, 490; PHYS 210, 211, 220, 252, 303, 325.
