Coordinator: Shanai Lechtenberg, slechten, x2393, Melrose 010, www.linfield.edu/advising/pre-professional-programs/pre-nursing.html

Linfield College offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree on the Portland Campus. McMinnville students must complete prerequisite coursework (outlined below) prior to migrating to the Portland campus. Typically, McMinnville students complete prerequisite requirements in two to two and half years and complete major coursework in Portland in two years.

Students must complete the following prerequisites with a 3.0 cumulative GPA (Linfield curriculum, paracurricular, and elective courses excluded) and a C or better in each course prior to migration to the Portland campus:

1. One year of lab science (NW)
   a. General Chemistry: CHEM 210-211 or
   b. Principles of Biology: BIOL 210-2
2. Anatomy: BIOL 212(NW): Not available for first semester freshman
3. Physiology:  BIOL 213– Prerequisite BIOL 212 (NW)
4. Microbiology:
   a. BIOL 275 Introduction to Microbiology (prerequisite BIOL 210-211 or CHEM 210-211) or
   b. BIOL 361 General Microbiology (prerequisite BIOL 210-211 and CHEM 210)
5. Nutrition: HHPA 280 (NW)
6. Life Span Developmental Psychology: PSYC 155 (IS)
7. Statistics: MATH 140 (QR)(prerequisite: HS algebra I, II and Geometry or equivalent).
8. Inquiry Seminar: INQS 125

*INQS 125 is a part of the 3.0 cumulative GPA required in the above prerequisite coursework, however students need to earn a D or better in that course.

Pre-Nursing Migration Eligibility Requirements & Provisions:

  • At Time of Application (Deadlines: Jan 2 for fall and Aug 1 for spring entry):

    • Students must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA in their completed prerequisites (Linfield curriculum, paracurricular and elective courses excluded).

    • Students must have a C or better in each prerequisite. A grade of a C- is not acceptable and will require the student to re-take the course. If a student earns a C- or lower in a course, that course is not eligible to be included on the nursing application. The prerequisite GPA will be calculated based on eligible coursework (that with a C or better).

    • Students must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA in ALL Linfield courses.

    • Completion of a minimum of 18 semester credits of nursing prerequisites (including a minimum 8 semester credits of lab science courses).

    • Students must submit an online Intercampus Nursing Application.

  • Prior to Migration (July 10 for fall entry and Jan 15 for spring entry):

    • Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA in their completed prerequisites (Linfield curriculum, paracurricular and elective courses excluded).

    • Students must maintain a C or better in each prerequisites.

    • All prerequisites must be completed.

    • Students must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA in ALL Linfield courses.

    • While it is not required, it is strongly recommended that students complete all LC and paracurricular requirements prior to starting the nursing major in Portland.

  • Degree progress: Students must complete 62 credits before starting in the Nursing program on the Portland campus.

  • Residency status: Students must complete at least 30 credits of course work at Linfield to be considered a resident Linfield student. (This is more specific to transfer students.)

  • Leave of Absence: Leave of absences will not be permitted for the sole purpose of completing nursing prerequisite classes at another institution except in special circumstances and approved by petition through Dan Preston in Enrollment Services.

  • Linfield students currently enrolled on the McMinnville campus will be admitted to the nursing major pending space availability if they are in good standing at the college and meet all nursing application criteria. Admission will be competitive, based on college academic record and supporting application materials if there are more applicants than spaces available.
