Peer Advisor Job Description

Peer Advisors work individually with faculty (Faculty Advisors) to teach Linfield’s new student course called Colloquium. The Colloquium course is central to students’ first-year experiences and is required for all new students in fall semester.  Peer Advisors serve as advisors and mentors to students both in and outside of the classroom.  Peer Advisors are prominent leaders on campus, representing Linfield to enrolling students and their families.

 

Primary Responsbilities

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Contacting new students, answering questions and helping with online course registration during the summer.
  • Representing the college to enrolling students and their families through summer contact and Orientation.
  • Instructing students on the use of academic planning resources and helping them revise their course schedules (as needed).
  • Assisting with new students’ academic adjustment to Linfield
  • Assisting  students in developing effective study strategies.
  • Planning and facilitating all Colloquium classes with Faculty Advisor and tracking student attendance.
  • Recording completed assignments.
  • Meeting individually with each student in your Colloquium section at least once during the semester.
  • Acting as a link between students and the Faculty Advisor, communicating specific concerns or questions to the faculty advisor.
  • Reflecting on experiences through submission of a weekly log/journal.

 

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 75 hours of work, including mandatory training in the spring of 2012, supporting students during registration in the summer of 2012, and teaching the Colloquium course through the 2012-13 academic year.
  • Peer Advisor Orientation Meeting in Spring 2012(mandatory)
  • Peer Advisor Workshop in Spring 2012 (mandatory)
  • All-Advisor Planning Meeting  (mandatory) – Thursday, April 19
  • Communication and registration assistance for new students throughout spring & summer (New student registration begins at the end of July)
  • All-Advisor Workshop – Wednesday, August  22
  • Orientation (August 24-26), frequent group and individual Colloquium meetings
  • Weekly meeting with Faculty Advisor to prep Colloquium classes
  • Weekly Colloquium classes on Monday evenings
  • Individual meeting with each student in your Colloquium section (scheduled yourself)
  • Weekly Peer Advisor group meetings (mandatory)

 

Required Skills and Experience

  • Ability to work well with peers, new students, and faculty
  • Ability to handle sensitive and/or confidential information
  • Solid academic background
  • Demonstrated leadership on campus and in the community
  • Completion of two semesters at Linfield College with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.

 

Compensation

Stipend of a minimum of $650.  Exact amount disclosed to successful candidates.
