Students who have completed an IB II degree, or AP Chemistry with a 4 or 5 on the AP test should contact the Chemistry Department (Dr. Brian Gilbert) regarding course enrollment options in their freshman year.
Students considering a chemistry major should:
• **have taken the on-line Chemistry Placement Exam during the summer to verify that they are ready to take CHEM 210; recommendation should be in file
• pick up a description of the major and a suggested 4-year course sequence from the Chemistry Department
• complete CHEM 321/322 Organic Chemistry and PHYS 210 by the end of their sophomore year
A chemistry major can be completed in three years (starting with General Chemistry in the sophomore year), but only with careful planning and hard work. It is preferable to “catch up” if necessary by taking a science-majors-level General Chemistry course with lab over the summer between freshman and sophomore years. Students in this situation should reach an agreement with their chemistry department adviser about summer and sophomore-year plans.
Students not sure whether to major in chemistry or biology should start both CHEM 210 General Chemistry and BIOL 210 Principles of Biology in Fall of their first year.
