Transferable Credits
Transferable credits at Linfield are evaluated on a course-by-course basis. Up to 72 semester credits can be transferred from a two-year college. There’s no limit to the amount of credit that can be transferred from a four year college. Keep in mind, however, that to complete your Linfield degree, no fewer than 30 semester credits must be taken at Linfield, including 20 of the last total 30 credits and 15 credits in your major.
Here’s the lowdown on how your courses will transfer
Transferable courses must:
- Be graded C (2.0) or better. No credit is granted for a C- or lower. Demonstration of a grade of C or better is required for transferability of Pass/Fail courses.
- Be 100-level or higher (exception of Math 095).
- Be academic in nature and correspond to course offerings at Linfield. Professional/technical courses won’t transfer for academic credit.
Please note that students may transfer a maximum of 8 semester credits of paracurricular courses to Linfield (4 credits being the maximum for any one department), assuming the above criteria are met.
Semesters vs. Quarters
Linfield operates on a 4-1-4 semester system. Our academic year typically begins the first of September with a 16 week semester, ending the middle of December. The “1” in 4-1-4 means the optional January term, during which students can take up to 5 semester credits. Our spring semester begins the second week of February and ends in May. Semesters are approximately 16 weeks – quarters are typically 10 weeks. So, to accurately reflect the amount of work that was done for a class, we do a Semester/Quarter-Hour Conversion.
Quarter hours are divided by 1.5 to equal semester hours, because quarters last approximately one third as long. Example: A 3 credit class in the quarter system is equivalent to 2 semester credits. Different systems, but you will not lose any credits in the conversion.
At Linfield, your transcripts will be evaluated for transfer credit on a course-by-course basis. Even if you have a transfer degree, such as an associate’s degree, i.e. the Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer (AAOT) degree, Linfield does not accept a “block transfer” to meet our general education requirements. Students who have satisfied the AAOT requirements will, at a maximum, have to take two Linfield Curriculum courses from two of three Areas of Inquiry as determined by the Registrar.
Where do you stand?
Your class standing is determined by the following criteria:First-year: 0 – 29.99 semester credits
Sophomore: 30-61.99 semester credits
Junior: 62-93.99 semester credits
Senior: 94 or more semester credits
