International Programs
Every Linfield student, regardless of major or academic discipline, has the opportunity to study abroad during his or her time at the college.
Linfield believes so strongly in the importance of studying abroad that the College provides students three options for doing so, and even pays for the first round-trip airfare from Portland International Airport.
The courses completed while abroad as part of a Linfield program will count toward graduation. Scholarships and financial aid apply to the cost of the program.
Overall, more than 70 percent of students participate in study abroad. Open Doors 2010, a Report on International Educational Exchange, ranked Linfield 21st among the top 40 baccalaureate institutions in the United States in this category.
January Term – Four Weeks
For students seeking a month-long, course-intensive travel experience, the January Term each year provides the perfect opportunity to study away from campus. Approximately 12 courses take Linfield professors and groups of 10 to 15 students around the world to study subjects’ particular to those countries or regions. Courses change each year, but always cover a wide variety of topics.
In January 2013, students will be studying:
- Aboriginal and Environmental Economics of Australia
- Marie Bashkirtseff: Life and Art: Nice, Rome, and Paris
- Environmental and Health Issues in Costa Rica
- The Art of the Mathematics of the East

Semester Abroad – Four Months
Many students elect to spend an entire semester abroad – becoming immersed in the culture and language of another country. Students studying Chinese, French, German, Japanese or Spanish as a minor, as well as students majoring in Anthropology, Intercultural Communication, or International Business, are required to spend one semester abroad.
