Melrose Hall/Ice Auditorium

image of location

Melrose Hall is the main administration building for the campus. Completed in 1929 at a cost of $220,000, construction of Melrose was made possible by donation from M.C. Treat. Melrose Hall takes its name from a monastery in Scotland, which was a favorite of Treat's. There are Melrose Halls on the campuses of the University of Redlands and William Jewell College, also made possible by donations from Treat.

Philosophy Professor Fred Fost remembers "when the basement of Melrose was the biology area. It was a dark cavernous place, with jars of specimens. Now it's remarkably different. That's all been converted into useful office space, and Jonasson Hall."

Leonard W. Riley, 1872-1945, president of Linfield from 1906 to 1931, and his wife Julia Pearce Riley, 1870-1956, are buried beneath the northeast corner of Melrose Hall

“I look the same on the outside, but the person inside is very different. I am a much stronger person, for instance. I also have a better sense of who I am, what I value and where I’m going in life. Not only did I grow on a personal level, but I grew academically and professionally. Linfield did a great job of helping me with that.”
Niki Hunter, Linfield Alumni '05
