Credits earned prior to enrollment at Linfield, including those from other regionally accredited colleges and universities and from AP or IB coursework, are evaluated on a course-by-course basis. Students who have utilized dual-enrollment credits to complete high school will be considered freshman applicants. Students will qualify as a transfer student if they have graduated from high school and are a former or current college student with at least 12 transferable semester credits from another regionally accredited college or university.
Transferable courses must:
- Be graded C (2.0) or better. No credit is granted for a C- or lower. Demonstration of a C or better is required for transferability of Pass/Fail courses.
- Be 100-level or higher (exception of Math 095)
- Be academic in nature and correspond to course offerings at Linfield. Professional or technical courses won’t transfer for academic credit.
Please note that students may transfer a maximum of 8 semester credits of paracurricular courses to Linfield (4 credits being the maximum for any one department), assuming the above criteria are met.
Students participating in dual-enrollment programs follow the above guidelines for their courses to transfer.
Semesters Versus Quarters
Linfield operates on a 4-1-4 semester system. Our academic year typically begins the first of September with a 16-week semester ending the middle of December. A one-month, optional quarter fills the month of January, when students can take up to five semester credits (typically one academic course and one paracurricular course). The spring semester begins the second week of February and ends the last week of May. Semesters are approximately 16 weeks, where as quarters are typically 10 weeks. In order to accurately reflect the amount of work that was done for a class, quarter credits are converted to a semester hour equivalent.

While the systems are different, students transferring will not lose any credit earned so long that it meets the above requirements.
At Linfield, transcripts will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis. Even if students have a transfer degree, such as an associate’s degree or the Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer (AAOT) degree, Linfield does not accept a “block transfer” to meet our general education requirements. Students who satisfied the AAOT will not have completed the Linfield Curriculum requirements. A full transcript evaluation and degree audit will be completed for transfer applicants for degree planning and enrollment.
Class standing is based on the following breakdown of credits earned:
Freshman: 0-29.99 semester credits
Sophomore: 30-61.99 semester credits
Junior: 62-93.99 semester credits
Senior: 94 or more semester credits
Most programs at Linfield require 125 credits to complete; however, for all degrees, no fewer than 30 semester credits must be completed at Linfield, including 20 of the last total 30 credits and 15 in the major.
Linfield will grant up to five elective credits for Advance Placement exam scores of 4 or 5 in academic areas normally taught at Linfield. Credit earned this way does not satisfy Linfield Curriculum requirements.
Linfield recognizes the IB Diploma and subject examinations and awards credit on a course-by-course basis for higher-level courses passed with a grade of 5, 6 or 7. Credit earned this way does not satisfy Linfield Curriculum requirements.
College Level Examination Program
Credit is given for coursework earned through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). These are evaluated on a course-by-course basis, but do not satisfy Linfield Curriculum requirements.
