Morgan: Elections

My Big and I – We both currently hold leadership positions within Alpha Phi

Today is a very nerve-racking and exciting day for me. Today is the day of Alpha Phi Elections. Alpha Phi runs elections by calendar year rather than academic year. There are so many leadership positions available within Alpha Phi which gives girls several opportunities to get involved.

Right now I hold the Director of Sisterhoods position. I plan all inner Alpha Phi events such as trips to the pumpkin patch, monthly movie nights, ice skating trips, etc.

This year, I am running for Vice President of Membership Recruitment. This position sits on the Executive Council and runs formal recruitment and continuous open bidding.

I am also running for President of Alpha Phi. This is a very big role to take on as a sophomore, but I truly believe that this is a position I could excel in.

I’ve beeASLCn working on my speech all week and I think that I am ready to give it to my sisters and see how they respond to it.

I will keep you posted as to what the outcome of elections are! Wish me luck! :)

Whereas there are lots of leadership opportunities within Greek life, there are over 100 leadership opportunities campus wide. It it so easy for someone to get involved and hold a leadership position if they do so desire. Some examples of leadership opportunities on campus are ASLC (Associated Students of Linfield College – Student Government), LAB (Linfield Activities Board), Board of Trustees (we have students that sit on this board), Alumni Relations, and the list goes on and on.

If you want to be a leader here on campus, you are definitely given the opportunity to do so!LAB

I hope to see you soon!

Morgan: Choir Concert – Verdi Celebration

Giuseppe Verdi

Last night, Tuesday, Nov. 12, the Linfield College Music Department put on a Verdi Celebration Concert. Giuseppe Verdi was a famous Italian opera composer. This year would have been Verdi’s 200th birthday. The Linfield Music faculty decided to put on a concert featuring some of Verdi’s most well known compositions.

Soloists included soprano Natalie Gunn, mezzo-soprano Beth Madsen Bradford, tenor Giovanni Formisano and baritone Anton Belov. The Linfield Concert Choir, under the direction of Anna Song, also performed.

The concert was held in ICE Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

Since I am a member of the Linfield College Concert Coir, I performed with the choir in this concert.

The event was really fun and all of the soloists were absolutely incredible!

Here is an example of some of Verdi’s work!

What is really great about the Linfield College Concert Choir is, you don’t have to be a music major or minor to be a part of it! I love to sing, however, I am not majoring or minoring in music so I love that I still get the opportunity to be in the choir.

This also goes for the Theater Department. You don’t have to be a theater major or minor to be in any of the productions.

Linfield College has some wonderful art programs and anyone who enjoys it can be involved.

I hope to see you soon!

Morgan: Family Weekend & Halloween

Young, Wild & Phi

Last weekend, Oct. 25-27 was family weekend here at Linfield College. There are all sorts of events that take place here during family weekend. From the Zeta Tau Alpha and Delta Psi Delta Haunted House, the football and soccer games, exploring Third Street in downtown McMinnville, and family brunch inside Dillin Dining Hall. One that I personally partake in is the Alpha Phi Star Search. Alpha Phi puts on this event every Friday during family weekend. The event is a talent show featuring Linfield Students to raise money for Women’s heart health and cardiac care, which is Alpha Phi’s philanthropy.

I compete in this event every year and it is always a blast. This year I competed by myself and sang two songs with my guitar. The first was “Better” by Maggie Rose and “Brave” by Sara Barellies. I also sang a duet with my good friend Logan Mays and we sang “Breakeven” by The Script. I also got to sing with 7 other Alpha Phi sisters who are all members of the Linfield College Concert choir. We formed and a cappella group called “Young, Wild & Phi” and sang “Royals” by Lorde.

Yesterday, Thursday Oct. 31 was of course Halloween! Residence halls were decorated spookily for Halloween! Rooms were also able to sign up to have little trick-or-treaters come to your dorm room. The kids have a Halloween carnival held in the Fred Meyer Lounge and then they go door to door trick-or-treating. I had some very adorable supermans and princesses come to my door last night. I decided to be a zombie for Halloween. Luckily, I dressed as a pilot when the kids came because I think the zombie makeup would have scared them and then they wouldn’t have taken any candy..

I hope to see you soon!

Morgan: Macklemore

On Tuesday, Oct. 22, I attended the Macklemore and Ryan Lewis concert at the Moda Center in downtown Portland. I was able to make to the concert easily because McMinnville is only an hour outside of Portland.Macklemore

Macklemore is an American rapper. Since 2000, he has independently released one mixtape, three EPs and two albums and significantly collaborated with producer Ryan Lewis. You may know Macklemore and Ryan Lewis from their single “Thrift Shop” which reached number 1 on the U.S. Billboard chart in 2013, selling more than 2.2 million copies.

The concert itself was amazing! It was such high energy and the music was awesome. The show was full of light and laser shows, several confetti cannons, giant balloons, crowd surfing, and lots of music.

Macklemore also performed here at Linfield back in 2012 for our annual “Wildstock” concert. Wildstock is a concert that is free to all Linfield students. It takes place every year in the late spring on the IM field. In 2012 we had Macklemore come and perform and last year, 2013, we had The Ready Set and Outasight perform. Many restaurants on Third Street also come and cater this event. There are also bouncey houses, laser tag, snow cones, as well as other booths/activities.

I hope to see you soon!

Morgan: Greek Life at Linfield

At Linfield, we have Greek Life. Greek Life is the fraternity and sorority community on campus. The terms “fraternity” and “sorority” describe groups of men and women who join together to offer fellowship, academic support, leadership training, participation in campus activities, service to the community and University, and preparation for future careers. They are referred to as Greek chapters because they are named according to the ancient Greek alphabet.

Here at Linfield we have four fraternities and four sororities.

Alpha Phi Bid Day 2012

  • Delta Psi Delta (ΔΨΔ)
  • Theta Chi (ΘΧ)
  • Kappa Sigma (ΚΣ)
  • Pi Kappa Alpha (ΠΚΑ)

  • Alpha Phi (ΑΦ)
  • Zeta Tau Alpha (ΖTA)
  • Sigma Kappa Phi (ΣKΦ)
  • Phi Sigma Sigma (ΦΣΣ)

The fraternities at Linfield have houses, however the sororities do not. The sororities just have a chapter room, and the chapter rooms are located in the basement of Miller Hall.

My Alpha Phi Big Sister and Grand Big Sister

I am a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority. In Alpha Phi, I hold a position as the Director of Sisterhood. I plan all of our events just involving the sisters of my sorority. Some events I have planned are movie nights, letter making nights, ice cream sundae nights, etc. I am currently planning a pumpkin patch trip for my sisters! This Saturday, Oct. 19th, the sisters of Alpha Phi will be making a trip out to Heiser Farms and their pumpkin patch. Right when we get there we all take a group picture. Then, the sisters can eat a variety of seasonal foods such as caramel apples, kettle corn, pumpkin lattes, hot chocolate, as well as hot dogs, burgers, etc. After we all eat, we get on the hay ride and ride it down to the pumpkin patch. Then all of the sisters get to pick out their own pumpkin. We then head back towards Linfield and carve the pumpkins together in the Alpha Phi chapter room. That is just one of the many sisterhood events that Alpha Phi does. All of the other sororities do fun events as well! For example, the sister of Zeta Tau Alpha all took a trip to downtown Portland, OR to watch a Trail Blazer Basketball game.

This week is also the week that the new sisters of Alpha Phi will be receiving a “big sister”. I have been crafting all week to prepare to reveal my identity to my new little. I am so excited! Although all of the Greek life organizations are a family, there are smaller families within the organization itself. You will always have a sister/brother to go to within your organization.

Each Greek Life organization also has a specific philanthropy. A philanthropy is a specific cause that each chapter contributes to. For example, Alpha Phi’s philanthropy is Women’s Cardiac Care/Heart Health. Zeta Tau Alpha supports breast cancer, Phi Sigma Sigma supports school readiness, and Sigma Kappa Phi supports the local animal shelter.

Greek Life creates the incredible opportunity to get involved on campus, support your community/philanthropy, gain leadership skills, and overall meet new people and make life long friends.

Linfield College Sororities on Bid Day 2013

Greek Life has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I high recommend rushing no matter what school you decide to go to.

(I would post more pictures of the fraternities, but they don’t take that many that I could find)

I hope to see you soon!
