Kyra: Music & Lyrics

It’s so hard to believe that it’s already three weeks into the Spring semester! Sometimes, it’s hard to take a step back and take a breather from the whirlwind of studying, meetinngs, or classes, but it’s so necessary. My friends and I try to make sure to go to the different events offered here. These past few weeks we’ve had several absolutely amazing Cat Cabs and visiting artists. On Valentines’ Day, the band “Tall Heights” performed for the Cat Cab. They’re an acoustic duo from the East Coast, playing the cello and guitar. I definitely recommend checking out their cover of “Skinny Love” by Bon Iver, it’s the best cover I’ve ever heard (and rivals the original for my favorite version). I’ll include the link at the end of the post. They are definitely on my playlist now! They have a Youtube channel as well as several EP’s on Spotify. However, the best part of the night was their Valentine’s serenade to a lucky audience member, whose name they drew from a raffle. I’m fairly certain everyone (even the boys) were jealous of the girl who won. They sang a beautiful mash-up of “Stand By Me” and “Earth Angel”.

I am also a huge fan of Slam Poetry and we’ve had several amazing poets come through Linfield recently. Most notably, Rudy Francisco and Natasha T. Miller. Both are nationally/internationally acclaimed slam poets and have created beautiful work. I’ll include links to more of their work at the end of this post as well.

I love having access to events like these during the year. Music and Poetry are so necessary  for me to stay sane, especially during Mid-Terms and Finals. Linfield always makes sure to bring out wonderful artists and speakers, from a very diverse array of topics. Tonight, after doing dinner with my friends at the local Thai restaurant, we’re going to go to a lecture on Hate and Extremeist groups, which should be very interesting! I’m looking forward to it!
