Glossary of Terms

Cleared-The Linfield term for “I have made all arrangements in writing with the Office of Accounting and the college knows exactly, to the penny, how I will pay for my tuition, room, board, student fees, Greek organization fees, lab fees, and any other charges on my account.” If you have “cleared the account” you may pass Go (but you don’t collect $200), get your student ID card or current semester sticker, pick up housing keys, etc. If it sounds like clearing the account is important-you are very correct!

Clearing Due Dates-Not really a glossary item, just a reminder if you didn’t see the million other references to our due dates. You need to clear your account by August 5th in the fall and January 20th in the spring. Doing this correctly and on time saves you money and hassles. This is an important hurdle to navigate.

LESA Linfield College agreement for financial responsibility for any and all charges placed on a student account.

Net Cash Due and Revised Net Cash Due-These are the phrases used for the following math equation:

Total Charges (Tuition, room, board, fees)

MINUS Net Financial Aid

EQUALS Net Cash Due

MINUS New financial aid or Adjustments Reducing the Bill (TMS, waiving insurance)

EQUALS Revised Net Cash Due

There is available an interactive Net Cash Due Calculator on our website at http://www.linfield.edu/file_uploads/net.xls to help you calculate the Net Cash Due and Revised Net Cash Due. The Revised Net Cash Due is due by August 5th for fall semester and January 20th for spring semester.

Net Financial Aid-If you receive financial aid, there will be an amount of aid that will apply toward the charges on your Statement of Account. We call it “net” financial aid because not all the aid on your award letter goes onto your account. Confusing? It might be, but just remember that the fine print in the instructions will help you work through the process.

Overdue Account-Uh oh. You didn’t meet the clearing dates or only partially completed the process. You could be charged a late clearing fee, and/or a 1% per month service charge on the balance you have not paid.

Statement of Account-It’s your bill. The first bill for each semester will include instructions and paperwork for return to the Office of Accounting. After this mailing we send a Statement of Account notification after the 10th of each month if there is a balance due. Any bill you receive after the clearing date is due upon receipt. Individual Statement of Account information is also available to every student on the Linfield Web Advisor at http://webadvisor.linfield.edu/WebAdvisor/WebAdvisor then “log in” tab. TMS-Tuition Management Systems (TMS) is an agency we contract with as an option for you to pay annual charges in monthly payments instead of once each semester. The typical TMS plan is for 10 months and covers the FULL YEAR charges for tuition, room, board and fees. You can contact an TMS representative for more details at 1-800-722-4867 or their website at https://www.afford.com.
