Linfield College

Academic Affairs Weekly

Commencement

Issue 5 - September 10, 2013

Dear Colleagues,

College affordability is on the minds of many, so more families are opting to send students to community colleges to start their education. Some of these students are very well suited to Linfield. Linfield's goal is to attract and retain the best and brightest of these students.

We saw our transfer student numbers increase this year, in accordance with our strategic plan, thanks to the work of Charlotte Goddard, Transfer Coordinator, and Janet Sasaki, Assistant Director of Admission and Transfer Recruiter, as well as many others.

A key question for these students is "How will my existing coursework transfer to Linfield?" They are often looking at multiple institutions and the more information we can provide, the better.

Academic Affairs has been working on transfer equivalencies for 30 partner institutions in Oregon, Washington, and California. These are community colleges from which we receive a large proportion of our transfer students, and some from which we hope to receive more. We started in the fall of 2012 by asking each department chair what a transfer student would need to have completed before transferring to Linfield in order to finish their major in two years. With that input, Bailey Maxwell ('12) and Charlotte are gathering course equivalency information from these 30 institutions for departmental review. As with all curricular matters, faculty have complete purview over what courses are accepted for specific credits. The work has a complex backend as we gather and present the information internally, but the final result will be a simple guide for each community college.

We appreciate the help you have provided to date and please feel free to contact Charlotte at cgoddard@linfield.edu with any questions.

Copyright Alert

Linfield was recently contacted by one of the leading providers of digital media worldwide, demanding a substantial usage fee for an image that was displayed on an academic department's webpage. A Linfield student intern had inadvertently posted a stock image, which was covered under a rights-management agreement held by the company. While we successfully resolved the issue, it is an excellent reminder that Linfield College is obliged to comply with copyright law, and could be found liable for even an innocent unlicensed use.

Request for Recruiting Information

On Sunday, February 16, 2014, competitive scholarship exams will be administered to 300 to 400 students who have been accepted to Linfield.

43% of the students who take the exams will enroll at Linfield; 45% of those that place will enroll. This activity is the single most effective tool we have, yielding more applicants then anything else! (Yield is the percentage of admitted students who actually enroll in a college.)

Please contact Patrick Wilson in the Office of Admission at pwilson@linfield.edu with the following:

  1. Update your departmental information.
  2. Identify the exam proctor.
  3. Identify who will be attending the college fair following the exams. Please think carefully about who can represent your department effectively.
