Welcome to the first week of classes! If you have not already seen Issues 1 and 2, Academic Affairs launched a weekly information email. These weekly updates will provide a one-stop shop for the emails that we usually send throughout the week; for example, announcements of events, news and deadlines. These will be archived on the Academic Affairs website for your reference, and will include links to necessary forms and documents. If there are ways we can improve, please let us know.

In consultation with the Faculty Executive Council (FEC), we have decided to center the Faculty Teaching and Learning Lunches (FTLL's) during September and October on preparation for the Faculty Retreat. As you know, the Faculty Retreat (October 25 and 26) will focus on what we, the faculty of Linfield College, wish our own standards to be regarding promotion and tenure. As a faculty member, this discussion could not be more important. As Associate Dean for Curriculum, Assessment, and Faculty Development, I believe it is crucial that the faculty development opportunities at Linfield are directly aimed at supporting our own goals for promotion.
Our goal for these fall semester FTLL's, then, is to begin the conversation in preparation for the retreat. There is no set agenda for any individual FTLL except the first one on September 5 in the NW Room of Dillin Hall. This is partly because, as much as possible, I wish these meetings to be a time when faculty are free to brainstorm, and partly because I wish for future agendas to grow out of ongoing discussions. I don't pretend to have any answers, and I will rely on the intelligence and good sense of Linfield Faculty to guide the discussion.
To get the ball rolling, I would like to invite all Linfield Faculty to discuss the results from the survey we all took early this summer. The results were released on August 1. If you would like them sent to you again please contact Meridith Symons or John Sagers. RSVP's for the FTLL's are not required but are encouraged, especially if you would like a lunch voucher. Portland campus faculty are welcome to participate; if you would like to attend via Skype, notify Meridith Symons. Please be aware, however, that we plan to schedule one or more meetings on the Portland campus as well.
Thanks in advance for taking time from your busy lives to engage in this discussion. I look forward to interesting and productive discussions.
